When the tree bark is cut or worn, a dark red juicy, foamy sap flows as if the tree were bleeding - hence the name 'dragon blood'. Tradition native tribes of South American Amazon use the sap in their traditional healing. The first mention of the tree dates back to 1600 Spanish naturalist and discoverer Father Bernabé Cobo, who described the healing effects of the juice, generally known by the communities of Mexico, Ecuador and Peru.
